Nikita Filippov, Head of the Bureau of Lawyers “De jure”, gave an interview to Vesti FM about how to recover compensation for moral damages for the death of a pet. He refuted the existing opinion that pets are just a thing and in the event of the death of a pet, there is every reason to recover moral damage compensation in favor of its owner for moral suffering, and not for the loss of the thing itself. In this case, the violation of personal benefits consists in the owner’s attitude to a living being as a family member with whom he lived together for a long time, his emotional attachment and psychological dependence, the need for communication in relation to a particular animal. For most owners, the loss of a beloved pet is a grief they have to deal with. Therefore, the absence in the law of a direct indication of the possibility of compensation for moral damage in the event of the death of a pet does not exclude the possibility of such compensation.
